TZ-231 Review

Like other labeling tapes, the TZ-231 tape is separated from the backing inside the label printer while the thermal print head burns the letters from the inside of the tape and then the two parts of the tape are stuck back together before the tape exits the machine. This is the reason why the letters can’t be rubbed off even with cleaners or alcohol.

The TZ-231 offers black letters on a white surface making it the most common type of label available since it can be used on any color of surface. Because it is so widely available, it is also the cheapest. Black letters on clear backing also looks good but it has to be used on light surfaces or the text is hard to read. The advertisers on this page will have some of the better prices. I prefer to buy the tapes 3 at a time so I don’t have to ration the tape and worry I will run out before the project is complete.

Here are some of the ways I use Brother TZ-231 tape:

  • Ends of cords for electronic devices. Label cords for devices such as stereo receivers, computers, wireless routers, and televisions makes it is when you have to pack everything up and move to a new house.
  • Car maintenance. When changing your oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, tires, or battery, record the mileage you changed at and affix the labels in your engine compartment. The Brother tape is strong enough to last for years!
  • Use with a Kill-A-Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor. I put a label on pretty much every electronic item in the house that showed the power usage of that item when on, off, or idle.
  • Printer. I always buy generic ink cartridges for my computer printer but have a hard time remembering the model I need to get. Now I just look at the label on the back of the printer and I’m set.
  • Breakers in my electric panel. Looks much cleaner than my sloppy writing and is easy to change if needed.
  • Folders. Probably one of the most common uses, I label my filing folders with Brother TZ-231 tape. Looks very neat and professional.

When typing out labels, I recommend doing so in batches so you have one long strip of tape which you then cut individual pieces with scissors. A lot less wasted tape this way. You can see how the Brother TZ-231 tape is so versatile. I highly recommend it for all your organizing needs.
